RL: Rocket League Championship Series Mid-Season Roundup

4th October 2017

After the recent addition of Kasper 'Pwndx' Nielsen to our Rocket League squad, it is safe to say that we have gone from strength to strength. The addition of Pwndx has revitalised both Niels 'Nielskoek' Kok and Hampus 'Zensuz' Oberg as players and the three of them have fantastic synergy. We are now over halfway through our first venture into the RLCS (Season 4) and thought it would be a good time to roundup our first four weeks of action! Having received a bye in the first week, we took to the arena in Week Two.

Our first game was against Gale Force and it was an incredible game to watch. Conceding two early goals is not something we wanted but we fought back to take a 4-2 lead.We held on as Gale Force tried to claw their way back, securing a 4-3 victory in game one of the series. The second game was a much tighter affair with Gale Force coming out as 2-1 victors. Game three wasn’t our game as we lost 3-0 to give Gale Force a 2-1 lead in the series. An incredible game four consisted of nine goals in all. While the opponents took an early lead, we stormed back to create a three-goal gap between us. Despite this lead, Gale Force came storming back within the last minute of play and evened up the game. They secured the game and series with a final goal in overtime.

The third week of competition was where we came into our own and play some great Rocket League. We first came up against an EnVyUs roster that has not had the greatest of RLCS seasons to date. We came out of the blocks flying in game one as we secured a 2-0 win courtesy of Pwndx and Nielskoek goals. The EnVy roster came into game two strong as they took scored an early goal to give them the advantage but it wasn’t enough to stop our full roster from getting onto the scoresheet. That gave us a 3-1 game win and a 2-0 series lead. Game three was a lot closer as it went into overtime at one apiece. It took nearly three minutes before Nielskoek scored the winning goal to give us a clean 3-0 series win.

Our second series of the day came against the league’s bottom placed side, Team Secret. A dominant performance in the first and second games saw us come out with 5-1 and 5-2 score lines respectively. Every member of the roster were once again involved in the scoring within the games and ensured a 2-0 lead in the series. Game three was much closer as the team dropped a gear but we still managed to secure a 2-1 win and another clean sweep.

We finished the day 6-0 in games and sitting in third place in the league with four games to go. Across the series, Nielskoek amassed 10 goals and five assists which earned him the RLCS Player of the Week title. In Week Four, we came up against FlipSid3 Tactics and the currently undefeated PSG eSports.

For all Rocket League fans, Week Four of the RLCS was a must-watch. The two undefeated teams clashed, and we also took on one of them. Our first series of the day came against FlipSid3 Tactics and it was an incredible series that came down to the wire. FlipSid3 took the early advantage in the first game of the series through Markydooda, but it was tied up not long after by Zensuz. The game continued to go back and forth until we secured our third goal to win it 3-2. Game Two was all FlipSid3 as they ran out 3-0 winners to tie up the series. A tight Game Three headed into overtime and was won by a Kuxir goal to take them to series point. Game Four was a complete goal fest as we traded blow-for-blow. We eventually came out 4-3 winners to tie the series once again. Nothing could separate us in the final game, and with nine seconds remaining Pwndx scored with a clearance from his own goal. This meant that we took the series 3-2 against an incredibly tough opponent, keeping our hopes of top two alive.

PSG came into our series undefeated and they showed exactly why in Game One. They scored three goals in quick succession, with Pwndx scoring a consolation to bring it back to 3-1. PSG came out hot in the second game, scoring twice after a lot of pressure on our goal. We came fighting back, goal after goal, with Zensuz levelling it up at 2-2 with four seconds left on the clock. Nielskoek secured the winner in overtime to even out the series. PSG once again secured an early two-goal lead in the next, but despite a lot of pressure, we just couldn’t bring even things up. They won Game Three, earning a 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth. An incredibly tight game went end to end, with each team piling on the pressure. Either team could have won it, but it was Chausette who scored with 14 seconds remaining to break the deadlock and secure the game, and series, for PSG.

After a 1-1 week, we are still in contention for a top two placement, but more importantly, with other results going in our favour, we have secured our place in the regional playoffs as well as in RLCS Season Five. Congratulations go to the team for that achievement, but there is still plenty of work to do with games against Method and Mock-It remaining as we look to qualify for Worlds. It is all to play for in the fifth and final week of RLCS league play, and it is sure to bring out some incredible Rocket League games.
