LoL: Gains, Losses and the Season Ahead

13th January 2017

Riding high on a very successful 2016 for our League of Legends team, there was little doubt that the new year would see exceL eSports hit the ground running. After a rapid shake-up in the roster, January has already taken us through qualifiers and back into the ESL UK Premiership proper. Our position was secured in emphatic style, and as such we are extremely pleased and proud to announce that same roster as the five legends hitting the Rift for exceL in the coming season:

Top: Niklot “Tolkin” Stueber

Jungle: Reece “Nocturnal Plex” Hall

Mid: Erik “ZiViZ” Lövgren

ADC: Joe “Joekerism” Kent

Support: Dan “Aux” Harrison

Those of you who have followed our steady climb up the ranks will notice that Aux, Joe and Tolkin all featured for us last season, with Joe being an exceL eSports veteran. After a very convincing trial period, quickly followed by ESL UK Premiership qualification, we are going into the new year on a mountain of confidence in this roster. The additions of Reece and Erik show that we want to build on the success we achieved last year, and in being seeded #3 by ESL for the coming split, there is only one way for exceL eSports to go – up!

The players will be ably supported by our new coaching team, whom we are proud to announce are joining to guide the team to victory alongside Team Manager Matt 'Crolux' McClenaghan . The additions of James “Yummy” Weller and Doruk “GreasyDrMeat” Hacioglu, headed up by Oliver “Friendlee” Debernitz, will drive forward our team as they work tirelessly behind the scenes. James is an analyst with extensive Challenger Series credentials, most recently working with current CSQ competitors Nerve, while Doruk has worked as coach for Perilous Void and more recently as part of Pro Steps, an organisation that helps coach Challenger players in NA towards their CS/LCS goals. Oliver is also an experienced coach, manager and analyst, most recently leading Iguana Esports to the German ESL title. We look forward to an exciting future for exceL League of Legends under their stewardship!

Unfortunately, with the announcement of the new coaching team comes a sad, but exciting goodbye. After overseeing our recent successes, Head Coach Josh “Furndog” Furneaux was offered and has accepted the role of Head Coach at G2 Vodafone in Spain.

On the recommendation of former exceL coach and captain, Ryan Barnett, we approached Josh to coach our roster. Josh worked tirelessly with the team, and taught at such a level that they quickly became favourites for any competitive tournament they competed in. He embodied the exceL value of furthering players’ esports careers by teaching to a standard beyond what was simply required. We would like to sincerely thank Josh for everything he has done to advance exceL League of Legends over the past year, and we wish him the very best in this exciting new opportunity. He has been a brilliant advocate for exceL, and while he will be missed, we know that he will continue to shine in a role that befits his immense talent.

Here’s to an exciting 2017 for all at exceL eSports. As always, you can keep up to date with all the news and action through our social media channels:
